The effect of cell phone radiation produced from Nokia 1600 model on rats treated with Annona muricata seed extracts was investigated. Twenty male albino rats were divided into four groups. Group 1 (control rats) received olive oil (0.3ml). Group 2 were exposed to the cell
phone radiation (1.15W/kg) without treatment. Group 3 were exposed to the phone radiation and administered 100mg/kg of Annona muricatan-hexane seed extract. Group 4 was also exposed to the phone radiation but administered 100mg/kg of Annona muricata ethanol seed extract. Groups 2, 3 and 4 were exposed to 5hours receiving mode of the phone radiation daily for 7weeks.On a daily basis also Annona muricata seed extracts (ethanol and n-hexane) dissolved in olive oil were administered orally to the rats according to their body weight for seven weeks. Exposure of the albino rats to the phone radiation caused a significant decrease (P< 0.05) in the packed cell volume, hemoglobin and red blood cells of the albino rats in group 2 (without treatment) compared to the control rats (group1) and the treated groups (3 and 4). Total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoproteins – cholesterol, creatinine and urea concentrations were significantly (P<0.05) high in the exposed rats without treatment (group 2).Similarly, aspartate amino transferase and alanine amino transferase activity, as well as lipid peroxidation was significantly (P< 0.05) high in group 2 rats when compared to the control and the treated groups (groups 3 and 4).The oral administration of Annona muricata seed extracts especially the ethanol extract to the treated animals significantly (p <0.05) reversed these effects. HDL-C was significantly high only on the control group compared to the exposed groups. The extracts exhibited no significant reduction on alkaline phosphatase activity compared to group 2.There was a general increase in the final body weight of the experimental animals. The results of the present work suggest that Annona muricata seed extracts, particularly the ethanol seed extract could protect against cell phone radiation. However, further studies are needed to establish the toxicity or non-toxicity of this extract.
